Diwali in Malmö 2026: Where to Eat and How to Celebrate
Updated: 6 days ago
Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November, and if you are looking for Diwali in Malmö, Masala & More at Baltzarsgatan 12 is open that day from 12:00 to 20:30, a few minutes' walk from Malmö Central Station. You can book a table for a family dinner, order a full Indian spread for pickup or delivery from our own website, or arrange catering for a Diwali party anywhere in Skåne. This guide covers the dates, what a Diwali meal from Punjab and Delhi actually looks like, and how to plan it in Malmö.
When is Diwali 2026 and what is being celebrated
Diwali is the festival of lights, the night when households light oil lamps, clean and decorate the home, and pray to Lakshmi for prosperity in the year ahead. The main day, Lakshmi Puja, is on Sunday 8 November 2026. It sits in the middle of a five-day run: Dhanteras two days before, when people buy something new for the kitchen, then Choti Diwali, then Diwali itself, followed by Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj, when sisters and brothers eat together.
In Malmö the timing matters. By early November the sun sets before 16:30, so the lamps, candles and strings of lights do the job they were meant to do. Most Indian families in Malmö, Lund and across the bridge in Copenhagen do the puja at home in the early evening and then sit down to eat, which is why Diwali dinners here tend to start later than a normal Sunday meal. Our Sunday hours run until 20:30, so a 18:00 or 18:30 booking leaves time for both.

What an Indian Diwali meal looks like
In Punjab and Delhi the day is built around two rounds of food. The afternoon is for snacks and chaat, eaten standing up while guests come and go: samosas, crisp fried things dipped in chutney, bowls of yoghurt-soaked dahi bhalla. The evening meal after the puja is richer and often vegetarian, because the day is a religious one, with dal, paneer, chole, pulao and plenty of bread, finished with something sweet.
Our 13-dish Indian street food menu covers the afternoon round. Samosa is 39 kr, Delhi Special Aloo Chaat 69 kr, Dahi Bhalla 69 kr (79 kr with mango), Golgappe 69 kr and Dahi Puri 79 kr. For a table of four or more the Street Food Platter at 129 kr is the easiest way to put a bit of everything in the middle. The full list, with what is in each dish, is in our street food guide.
For the main meal, Dal Makhni is the dish every Punjabi family expects on Diwali night. Ours is simmered overnight on a slow-cooked onion-tomato base, so by Sunday evening it has had the hours it needs. Butter Paneer, Chole with a tandoori kulcha, Palak Paneer and a thali combo cover the vegetarian side of the table; about half our menu is vegetarian and many dishes can be made vegan on request. Guests who eat meat usually add Butter Chicken (169 kr), Lamb Kadhai (199 kr) or our bestseller, the bone-in Tandoori Chicken Biryani. All chicken and meat dishes are halal.
Bread is not an afterthought on Diwali. Every naan, roti and kulcha is slapped onto the wall of our clay tandoor at around 480°C and baked to order, which is why we describe them as the most authentic smoky tandoori breads in Sweden. Order one garlic naan and one tandoori roti per person and the table will be fine.
Celebrating Diwali at the restaurant in central Malmö
Diwali Sunday is one of the busiest evenings of our year, and tables of six to twelve are the norm, so book early at masalaandmore.se/reservations or call +46 70 304 76 42. If your family or friends are spread across Skåne, Baltzarsgatan 12 is a practical meeting point: a few minutes on foot from Malmö C, 20 minutes from Lund by train and about 35 minutes from Copenhagen Airport.
The weekend before the main day is also part of the festival. Dhanteras falls on Friday 6 November and Choti Diwali on Saturday 7 November, and on both nights we are open until 22:30, so a late dinner after work or after shopping for the house fits comfortably. Tell us about any allergies when you book and we will plan the table around them.
Diwali dinner at home: ordering for pickup or delivery in Malmö
Many families prefer to eat at home on Diwali night, with the lamps lit and the puja just finished. Order from our own website for pickup at Baltzarsgatan 12 or home delivery. Delivery costs 89 kr, the minimum order is 249 kr, and delivery is free on orders over 599 kr, which a Diwali order for four will usually pass.
Dal Makhni, Butter Chicken, Lamb Kadhai, Chole and biryani all travel well and reheat without losing anything. Tandoori breads are best eaten within the hour, so order them in the same basket and keep them wrapped until you sit down. Place the order earlier in the afternoon rather than at 19:00, when the kitchen is at its busiest.
Diwali parties and office celebrations across Skåne
Diwali is increasingly marked at workplaces in Malmö and Lund, by student societies at Lund University and by community associations that hire a hall for the evening. We cater Indian food across Skåne, from a street food counter for a mingle to a full dinner with dal, curries, biryani and breads for a hundred guests. Start on our catering page and read how we plan event menus before you get in touch. November is a busy month, so send the date as soon as it is fixed.
